Abstract

The purpose of this review is to provide a critical analysis of the work Pardos: a visão das pessoas pardas pelo Estado brasileiro (2021), bringing particular perceptions about the book’s theme. The methodology is based on bibliographical reading on the subject and discussion at academic events in the Social Sciences and among Anthropologists peers. The relevance of the topic is demonstrated by the necessary renewal of the perspective on the topic that brown researchers propose in their research and works, defending a positive perspective on being brown in Brazil. The book makes a contribution to the debate on ethnic-racial relations, especially by trying to trace a history of the Brazilian brown population, and this history is revealed in its relationship with the State. Denis Moura dos Santos dialogues with works from the Social Sciences, History, Law, Education, as well as legislation journalistic news on the topic. Among other things, it is concluded that it is necessary to take seriously the particularity of the Brazilian brown population, without linking it to another racial group, and it is essential to think about brown people from the perspective of brown people and their experiences of racialization and discrimination. As a result of the discussion, we see the need to talk about caboclos and brown-indigenous people, emphasizing brown diversity in Brazil.
