Abstract

This article aims to discuss the use of the figure of the Black Mother in the speeches of the City Council of São Paulo, especially during and after the promotion of the Monument to the Black Mother installed in Largo do Paissandu in January 1955, next to the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos, in São Paulo's downtown. In the speeches it was possible to glimpse the defense of an anti-racist stance of the councilmen, in addition to an affective reference to the wet nurses, at a time when this symbol was being rediscussed by intellectuals and by part of the black community of the city.
