notes on the role of Jews and anti-Judaism in Caesarius of Arles’ career (502-542)

In this article we address the issue of anti-Judaism in the career of Caesarius, a Gallic aristocrat who between 502 and 542 was bishop of the city of Arles and who stood out as one of the main political and ecclesiastical authorities in southern Gaul (present day France). Although he has been the object of growing scholarly attention since the mid-twentieth century, when his work as a preacher and "church reformer" was given great prominence, his relationship with the Jews has remained an underexplored theme - a gap we hope to help fill. In this paper, besides observations on Caesarius' bishopric, we aim to present the historiography that analyzed his relationship with the Jews, to discuss the pieces of evidence available to approach the theme, and finally to suggest new possible interpretations about the subject.
