Resumo

Este trabajo parte del debate sobre el desarroilo sustentable y lo aplica al contexto de las ciudadesen América Latina. Una preocupación central deltrabajo es trascender eí abuso retórico dei conceptode desarroilo sustentable hacia un conceptooperativo aterrizado en la complejarealidad de lasciudades de la region. La primera parte del trabajotoca el tema del desarroilo sustentable en el contextode la crisis urbana. La segunda parte se centra en labùsqiieda de un concepto operativo que permitaorientai- esfuerzos para mejorar el crecimiento delas ciudades latinoamericanas. Esta secciónincorpora las experiencias de descentralizaciónmunicipal y los esfuerzos para fortalecer la gestionlocal del medio ambiente y el crecimiento urbano.Las conclusiones resaltan la necesidad de cambiosen la interpretación del concepto en favor de unmayor vinculo con la realidad urbana de AméricaLatina.
