The article aims to analyze the importance of family farming in the scope of brazilian agriculture, with regard to the value of production, the main food produced and the participation of the regions of the country in the generation of wealth in this segment. Specifically, it aims to conduct a brief review of the theoretical framework on the concept of rural development as well as to contextualize the social and economic development of Brazilian agriculture. The methodology consists of a bibliographic review based on the texts by Abramovay, 1992; Chalita, 2005; Matos and Pessôa, 2011; FAO / INCRA, 1994; Schneider and Cassol, 2013 and; GRISA et al, 2018 that present the main policies to support rural development for family farming. Statistical data will be extracted from demographic and agricultural censuses made available by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE; Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply - MAPA, among others. Finally, the social, economic and regional inequality that exists in agriculture between business and family farming, also occurs within the family farming segment.
