The present study has as its object the use of participant methodologies in the production of knowledge related to the process of identifying the cultural references of Candomblé terreiros, in the public policies on cultural heritage. Specifically, it aims to present the result of the World coffee dynamic applied to raise the demands of Candomblé terreiros and the perspective on the role played by IPHAN about their preservation. This is a methodology applied as part of the activity “Workshops for the Safeguarding of Cultural References of African Matrix: communities and sacred places”, carried out in cooperation between IPHAN technicians and researchers from LEAFRO-NEABI-UFRRJ in 2019, in the scope of the research with a group of Candomblé terreiros in the metropolitan region of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The reflections pointed to the importance of collective learning that results from the application of this type of methodologies, as they seek to promote effective participation, constant interaction, and permanent dialogue between participants, even more so when it comes to issues related to the processes for recognition, protection, and safeguard of cultural assets of African origin.
