Contingency and expression: the concept of "articulatory practice" in Critical Discourse Analysis
Keywords:
Discourse. Critical theory. Critical realism. Articulatory praticeAbstract
This paper focuses on the relationship between necessity and contingency in language studies, such as it is understood within Critical Discourse Analysis (henceforth CDA), with particular attention to the concept of “articulation”. Apart from presenting a brief historical overview of CDA, the paper introduces some tenets of critical realism, a philosophical orientation which underlies critical discourse studies. After an examination of central issues in this theoretical framework, considerations are made about how CDA draws on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to deal with necessity and contingency in linguistic analysis.
