Abstract

ln this paper I will examine questions of power related to translation and travel. I analyze the way the British translator and traveller Richard Francis Burton accounts his travel to Brazil and the way he is here translated. The processes of translating and travelling are considered as modes of establishing relationships between the self and the Other, the national and the foreign. I examine the implications of these relationships when the traveller comes from a hegemonic country, writes about a non-hegemonic one and is there translated.
