Abstract

The authors examine the three main models of integration between melody and lyrics in Brazilian popular songs, aiming to verify their interaction in some specific contexts. In order to do so, some semiotic techniques on song analysis are discussed. "Terra", by Caetano Veloso, has been chosen as an example of the descriptive capabilities of semiotics applied to this artistic language. In this paper, the authors distinguish between the contents in the melody and those associated to the lyrics, trying to identify the contribution of the relation between both components for the song's global meaning.

Luiz Tatit, USP

Professor do Departamento de Linguística da F.F.L.C.H. da USP e pesquisador do CNPq, é autor, entre outros livros, de O cancionista: composição de canções no Brasil (São Paulo: Edusp, 1996), Semiótica da canção: melodia e letra (São Paulo: Escuta, 1994), Musicando a semiótica (São Paulo: Annablume / Fapesp, 1997) e Análise semiótica através das letras (São Paulo: Ateliê, 2001). Em co-autoria com Ivã Carlos Lopes publicou também "Ordre et desordre dans 'Fora da Ordem' " (Nouveaux actes sémiotiques, 92-93. Limoges, PULIM, 2004).

Ivã Carlos Lopes, USP

Professor do Departamento de Linguística da F.F.L.C.H. da USP, tem traduzido livros e artigos de semiótica. Entre suas publicações recentes, figuram: "Entre expressão e conteúdo: movimentos de expansão e condensação" (Itinerários, 20. Araraquara, FCL-UNESP, 2003); "Ordre et desordre dans 'Fora da Ordem'" (Nouveaux actes sémiotiques, 92-93. Limoges, PULIM, 2004), em co-autoria com Luiz Tatit.
