NATION-STATE AND THE HOMOGENIZATION OF PEOPLES:
A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE FORMATION OF THE ANGOLAN ARMY

After hundreds of years of Portuguese colonization, Angola became independent in 1975. However, the Alvor Agreement (1975) integrated the armed forces of the country's three rival liberation movements — the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA), the Popular Liberation Movement of Angola (MPLA), and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) — into what became the Angolan National Army. Given this context, the objective of this research is to critically analyze the concept of nation-state and its application in the formation of the Angolan army, highlighting the incongruity of this correlation: its utopian nature based on precepts of homogenization of peoples originating from the same territory. Using a qualitative methodology, with a hypothetical-deductive approach, the hypothesis is that this correlation instigated even more conflicts and enmities between these groups. To support the analysis, we use classic authors on international relations, who address and discuss different concepts of war and strategy, Nicolau Maquiavel (2019) and Carl Von Clausewitz (s.d.), as well as contemporary authors who contribute to the reflection, such as Ernest Gellner (1983), Carlos Marighella (2003), John Paul Lederach (1997) and José Murilo de Carvalho (1990).
