This research aimed to contribute to the debate on managerial work by bringing together constructs related to experienced contradictions and expectations, from the perspective of managers of organizations in Belo Horizonte/MG. A qualitative, descriptive research was carried out with 40 male and female managers. The results showed three categories associated with the contradictions experienced in the work environment: meaning of “being a manager”, manager autonomy versus employee (in)subordination, bonus versus managerial burden. The expectations are related to the strategies for the managerial career and the desire to remain acting as a manager, despite the challenges and adversities of the function.
