The structural transformation of the counterpublics before artistic and cultural controversies

Abstract

In recent years, demonstrations against the arts have questioned the supposed receptivity of the audience. The fact that detractors share several characteristics of the counterpublics suspended the term's exclusive link to progressive audiences. But the change has not just expanded the scope of the concept; it ranges from the rise of ultraconservatives to the disjunction between the normative and descriptive instances which the concept was able to conflate. After reviewing Michael Warner's theory about counterpublics, we discuss the uses of the term in the field of art, and so confront them with two expressions of that change: the Queermuseu case and the formation of an ultraliberal counterpublic.
