Abstract

This extension project addresses the bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and oral health, highlighting how periodontitis can negatively impact glycemic control in diabetic patients. The central issue is the lack of knowledge about the interrelationship between these conditions and the absence of adequate preventive practices. The general objective is to promote comprehensive health care for diabetic patients with periodontal disease through educational actions. Using an action-research approach, lectures, workshops, and digital media were implemented to raise awareness and educate the target population. The results demonstrated a positive impact on glycemic control and oral health among participants, highlighting the effectiveness of the adopted strategies. It is concluded that integrated education and interdisciplinary care are essential to improving the quality of life of diabetic patients, reinforcing the importance of educational strategies in managing chronic conditions.
