Multidisciplinary health promotion for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers

experience report of an extension project in Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract

The purpose of this report was to describe the experience of the university extension project entitled “Multidisciplinary health promotion for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers”, at the Dentistry School of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. This extension project aims to promote health in a multidisciplinary way and contribute to improving the life quality and inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers. The project activities consist of in-person visits to institutions for people with intellectual disabilities, where recreational-educational activities on oral health are carried out with the students of the institutions, as well as lectures with discussion groups about health for the parents and caregivers. The extension project also works remotely, producing and sharing content on the topic "Health of People with Disabilities" through its social media profiles (Instagram and Facebook), seeking to disseminate scientific content in an accessible way to the community in general. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity for the extension project participants to interact with people from different economic, social, cultural and health realities, exposing the team members to contextualized, dynamic and challenging learning.
