Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to report the experience of 22 undergraduate students from the Dentistry program at the Autonomous University Center of Brazil (UniBrasil) while carrying out an integrative project at the Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional Individuals (APAE) for people with intellectual disabilities, in the municipality of Pinhais/PR. In the second semester of 2022, visits to the hosting institution were conducted to carry out oral health promotion and prevention activities, including actions aimed at inclusion and integration of dental treatment needs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This experience report demonstrates that extension programs can serve as a facilitator for access to oral health for people with disabilities who have limited access to knowledge on the subject and come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, these contribute to the training of future dentists by breaking paradigms and prejudices regarding the care of patients with intellectual disabilities, as reluctance to treat these individuals often results from fear of the unknown. Therefore, educational practices such as those developed in this project aim not only to overcome fear but also to promote and enhance dental care through strategies for qualified and safe management and care, within the framework of integrality and humanization.
