The objective of this study was to conduct an in-depth analysis of the importance of the environment in democracies, aiming to understand whether democratic countries tend to show a greater commitment to environmental preservation compared to non-democratic regimes. To achieve the proposed objective, updated data from the 2023 Democracy Index, prepared by The Economist, and the 2024 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which refers to the year 2023, were used. The conclusions show that it is possible to note that it is possible to note that it is possible to notice that democracies tend to have a better environmental performance compared to authoritarian regimes. This is probably due to factors such as transparency, accountability and citizen participation, which can pressure governments to adopt stricter environmental regulations and invest in sustainable practices.
