Coalizões de Oposição nas Eleições Legislativas para Interromper a Erosão Democrática: Os Casos da Polônia e da África do Sul

This article analyzes the impact of opposition coalitions in countering democratic erosion by comparing Poland and South Africa, both “Third Wave” democracies at different stages of democratic decline. Through a qualitative study, it investigates how these coalitions operate in legislative elections to curb setbacks. Poland, under the Law and Justice party since 2015, has experienced attacks on judicial independence and press freedom, while South Africa has faced systemic corruption within the African National Congress since 2012. The research indicates that, although coalitions can limit democratic deterioration, their effectiveness depends on institutional, social, and political factors specific to each country.
