Abstract

The intensification of political polarization and social divisions has occupied a central place in contemporary debates, often being interpreted as an expression of the generalized fragmentation of social life. The relevance of this sossier lies in its proposal to understand these processes from an anthropological perspective attentive to the ethnographic dimensions through which divisions are produced, experienced, and negotiated across different social contexts. The aim of this article is to introduce the dossier Anthropology of “Social Cracks”: Making a Living and Making Society in a Polarized and Schismatic World, while reflecting on processes of polarization and the emergence of what we term schismatic reason. We develop a theoretical and analytical reflection on contemporary dynamics of polarization, emphasizing ethnographic and empirically grounded approaches, and subsequently analyze the articles that compose the dossier in order to articulate our concerns with those raised by the contributors. The selection of articles prioritized empirical and ethnographic research capable of highlighting the diversity of forms assumed by social cracks in distinct contexts. The contributions demonstrate that polarization and social divisions should not be understood as fixed entities or mere ideological oppositions, but rather as relational effects produced through processes of social interaction. Furthermore, we reflect on the importance of sociotechnical ecologies and digital public arenas in the intensification, circulation, and reconfiguration of dynamics of polarization, social cracks, and schisms, as well as their impacts on ways of making society, constructing forms of belonging, and making a living. An anthropological approach grounded in ethnography thus enables us to grasp the heterogeneity and complexity of these processes, contributing to a more situated understanding of contemporary forms of polarization, social cracks, and schisms.
