Abstract

The Mothers of May Movement is a network of mothers and relatives of the victims of the Crimes of May of 2006, an episode in which the murders of more than 600 people in the state of São Paulo were committed by agents of the State. From their union and struggle, Mães de Maio became one of the main movements to confront the genocide of poor, black, and ghetto people in Brazil. In this article, I analyze the way in which these mothers have narrated and denounced state violence, evaluating some of the many theoretical yields that the native category of democracy of the chacinas can offer us for understanding the ongoing death policies in the country.
