In the face of cognitivist reductionism, which transforms the rich experience of chess into mere cold calculations, this article seeks to restore the atmosphere of chess. To this end, based on bibliographical reviews, participant and autoenographic observations, the article sets out to provide an initial characterization of the atmosphere that we will call the “forest of pieces”. In order to capture the atmospheric nuances of each modality, the conditions of engagement in physical and virtual chess are compared. The bibliographic selection lists names and works that directly (such as Tim Ingold and Hans Gumbrecht) or indirectly (such as James Gibson and Anna Tsing) discuss the concept of “atmosphere”. As for the field examples, the data obtained in person was collected during the personal experiences of one of the authors with the practice in recent years, while the data obtained remotely - through videos and social networks - was obtained during the writing of this text. The paper concludes that the atmospheric conditions of the match, far from being a mere accessory or backdrop, are constitutive of the chess experience and should therefore be taken seriously in any investigation into the practice.
