Abstract

The text examines the impact of the resurgence of religions as one of the main conclusions of the late 20th century. Initiated at the turn of the 1990s, this phenomenon gave full meaning to the term “globalization.” As a result of widespread transformation, virtually every society in the world experienced a proliferation of transnational missionary movements from various global religions, often competing for small territorial shares. Faced with this increase in the competition of “independent religions” – those not tied to states and distinct from established religious traditions – governments often found themselves surprised, forced to improvise.
