Abstract

In this essay, four intellectual experiences based on culture, which had the objective of generating self-esteem in the black population of America, will be analyzed. Marcus Garvey's pan-African ideal, the poetry of the Black movement Harlem Renaissance, the renovating verses of Nicolás Guillén and the incisive journalism of Gustavo Urrutia helped to construct a black subjectivity of liberating nature.

    Licenciado em História (1996) e Mestre em Estudos Interdisciplinares em América Latina, Caribe e Cuba (2002), pela Universidade de Havana (Cuba). Doutor em Estudos Étnicos e Africanos pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (Brasil). Conferencista sobre temas de História e Cultura em diversas instituições de Cuba, Colômbia e Brasil. Publicou artigos e ensaios em diversas revistas e coletâneas. É autor do livro El espíritu de una época (1922–1930). Ensayos sobre la Cultura Cubana (Editorial Académica Española, 2012).
