Melhoramentos publisher released Histórias extraodinárias, in 2006, with four translations of stories by Edgar Allan Poe. ‘The Oval Portrait” is the object of this paper which intends to analyze some illustrations, with emphasis on the relation between word and image, trying to identify the relations of convergences and divergences between the verbal and visual texts, based on theoretical theories of intersemiotic translation and adaptation.
