GRADIENCE AND VARIATION IN FOCUS CONSTRUCTIONS IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE

Abstract

In this paper we exemplify and analyze eight different types of cleft constructions in Brazilian Portuguese. We show that the differences among the constructions, with regard to their morphosyntactic properties, are quantitative, which explains their potential mutual interchangeability. We show that some of the constructions display a higher degree of grammaticalization and function as focus marker in simple clauses.

Maria Luiza Braga, UFRJ

Mestre em Língua Portuguesa pela PUC-RJ e doutora em Linguística pela Universidade da Pensilvânia-USA. Fez pós-doutorado na Universidade da Califórnia em Santa Bárbara e, posteriormente, na Universidade de Amsterdam e, também, no Centro de Linguística da Universidade de Lisboa. É professora no Departamento de Linguística e Filologia da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Em sua dissertação e tese priorizou a abordagem variacionista. Interessa-se pelos fenômenos e processos de gramaticalização em sua interface com a Gramática das Construções.

Diego Leite de Oliveira, UFRJ

Mestre em Linguística pela UFRJ e cursa atualmente o doutorado em Linguística pela mesma universidade. É professor de Língua e Literatura Russas do Departamento de Letras Orientais e Eslavas da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Atualmente investiga estratégias de focalização em russo e em português. Interessa-se por fenômenos relativos a gramaticalização e sua interface com a Gramática de construções em perspectiva tipológica.

Elisiene de Melo Barbosa, UFRJ

Bacharel em Letras pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. É professora de Língua Portuguesa no Município do Rio de Janeiro. Participa de estudos na área de Linguística, com ênfase na Gramática de Construções.
