Abstract

This work aims at investigating the occurrence of vowel insertion in word medial clusters (object > ob[i]ject) in the speech of Brazilian learners of English as L2. A variationist methodology was used (LABOV, 1975; LABOV et al., 2006 [1968] and 2008 [1972]), with 18 informants who were asked to read sentences and texts in English. The speech data were recorded and codified in order to be statistically analyzed using GoldVarb X (SANKOFF, TAGLIAMONTE & SMITH, 2005).

Mestre em Linguística, com ênfase em Teoria e Análise Linguística pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba. Atualmente é professora da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba, com experiência na área de educação, em específico, ensino de Língua Inglesa.

Rubens Marques de Lucena, UFPB

Doutor em Linguística, com ênfase em Teoria e Análise Linguística pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba. É Professor Adjunto da mesma universidade, onde atua no Departamento de Letras Estrangeiras Modernas e no Programa de Pós-graduação em Linguística (PROLING). Suas áreas de interesse em pesquisa são em Sociolinguística Variacionista e Fonologia. Luana Anastácia Santos de Lima é mestre em Linguística, com ênfase em Teoria e Análise Linguística pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba. Atualmente é professora da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba, com experiência na área de educação, especificamente no ensino de Língua Inglesa.
