This paper discusses some problems of syntactic variation in European Spanish focusing on cleft sentences variation. From data obtained in previous studies, we show that the true clefts are present in vernacular European Spanish (at least in some varieties) and we suggest that the normative force may be the cause of the ‘repression” of such constructions in the educated norm.
