Abstract

This article analyses the Lima Barreto’s chronicles ‘As enchentes” (1915), ‘A derrubada” (1914), ‘Sobre o desastre” (1917), ‘Megalomania” (1920) and ‘Melhoramentos” (1922), and it attempts to evaluate how the writer questions the concepts of modernity defended by the Brazilian society’s hegemonic sectors in the early twentieth century. Finally, discusses the topicality and the relevance of the issues addressed by the author.

André Dias, UFF

Doutor em Letras ( Estudos da Literatura) pela Universidade Federal Fluminense - RJ (2009). Mestre em Educação Brasileira pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (2004). Graduado em Letras (Português/Literaturas) pela Universidade Federal Fluminense - RJ (1995). Atualmente é Professor Adjunto II de Pesquisa e Prática de Ensino de Português e Literaturas no Departamento de Educação, do Instituto de Educação de Angra dos Reis da Universidade Federal Fluminense. É também Professor do Programa de Pós - Graduação em Estudos de Literatura, no Instituto de Letras da UFF, atuando na linha de pesquisa: Literatura, História e Cultura. Autor de diversos artigos científicos e do livro: Lima Barreto e Dostoiévski: Vozes Dissonantes (EDUFF, 2012). Lidera o Grupo de Pesquisa Leitura, Literatura e Formação do Leitor, certificado pela UFF e pelo CNPq, que investiga o lugar da Leitura, em especial de obras literárias, no mundo contemporâneo e o problema da crise da leitura na universidade. Tem experiência na área de Letras e Educação, com ênfase em sociedade e ideologia, trabalhando principalmente com os seguintes temas: Literatura Brasileira, Teoria da Literatura, Análise de Discursos, representações sociais, Prosa, Prática de Ensino, Leitura e Formação do Leitor.
