This article analyses the Lima Barreto’s chronicles ‘As enchentes” (1915), ‘A derrubada” (1914), ‘Sobre o desastre” (1917), ‘Megalomania” (1920) and ‘Melhoramentos” (1922), and it attempts to evaluate how the writer questions the concepts of modernity defended by the Brazilian society’s hegemonic sectors in the early twentieth century. Finally, discusses the topicality and the relevance of the issues addressed by the author.
