The article aims to discuss two fundamental concepts for the theory and criticism of children's literature: the conception of children on which children's works are built and the social function attributed to children's literature. The text analyzes how important theorists of Brazilian children's literature dealt with the issue and how the different conceptions of childhood determined the course of children's literature in the country.
