Abstract

This work aims to analyze Jean Rhys’s novel Wide Sargasso Sea in order to display the author’s strategy to deconstruct Charlotte Brontë’s eurocentric discourse in Jane Eyre, granting voice to the colonized subject, besides allowing a ‘dive” into the web woven by patriarchy, getting men and women stuck in predetermined social roles.

Shirley de Souza Gomes Carreira, UERJ / UNIABEU

Doutora em Literatura Comparada (UFRJ), com pesquisa de Pós-Doutoramento em Literaturas de Língua In­glesa (UERJ). Atualmente, é Professora Titular da UNIABEU, onde também atua como editora-chefe das revistas eletrônicas e-scrita e UNIABEU. Seus en­saios focalizam questões relacionadas ao pós-colonialismo, identidade, gênero e à migração, bem como as relações entre a literatura e a memória étnica. Foi Coordenadora do Curso de Letras e do Programa de Mestrado em Letras e Ciências Humanas da UNIGRANRIO. É investigadora convidada do Centro de Estudos Linguísticos, Comparados e Multimédia da Universidade Autó­noma de Lisboa.–Tem trabalhos publicados em livros e periódicos do Brasil, México, Portugal, Estados Unidos, Itália e Inglaterra.
