Francisco Xavier de Mendonça Furtado and Teotônio da Silva Gusmão employ, in their letters, the Locus amoenus and Locus horrendus’ topoi to describe the landscape of the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão. Our analysis, in this article, aims to show that, more than an usage of commonplaces, this description take part in pombaline politics to land occupation and organization.
