I propose here a reflection in four times about the modern discipline of Classical Studies, considering its general history and, subsequently, its specific formation in Brazil. For this, I briefly situate a common discourse about the crisis in this area, mentioning some studies on the subject, and then outlining — in the light of my own training and experience as a classicist in Brazil — certain aspects of its recent disciplinary history (since the end of the 18th century), with an emphasis on its establishment at the Brazilian university from the middle of the 20th century onwards. I finish with some practical considerations on the various meanings of the question that has been suggested by the subtitle of this paper: Classical Studies in Brazil, a present [gift] from the past?
