THE EMPLOYMENT OF RELATIVIZATION STRATEGIES IN WRITTEN ACADEMIC ENGLISH AS A FUNCTION OF THE SEMANTIC CHARACTERIZATION OF THE ANTECEDENT

Abstract

The alternation of relativization strategies is analyzed in a sample of academic texts from different areas of knowledge written by native English-speakers. Quantitative-based variationist analysis revealed a close correlation between the relativization strategy employed and the semantic value of the term to which the relative clause is linked, which was explained based on the semantic theory of the Principle of Thematic Hierarchy, vis-à-vis its syntactic counterpart: the Hierarchy of Accessibility. On the extralinguistic level, there was also a correlation between the choice of the relativization strategy with the area of knowledge and the sex of the author of the text. Finally, we sought to point out ways to apply these findings to the teaching of English for specific purposes.

Dante Lucchesi, UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL FLUMINENSE

Professor Titular de Língua Portuguesa da Universidade Federal Fluminense, pesquisador 1C do CNPq, sendo membro do Comitê Assessor de Letras e Linguística desse órgão, desde outubro de 2016. Graduou-se em Letras Vernáculas pela Universidade Federal da Bahia, em 1986; concluiu o Mestrado em Linguística Portuguesa Histórica pela Universidade de Lisboa, em 1993; e doutorou-se em Linguística pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, em 2000. Coordena o Projeto Vertentes do Português Popular do Estado da Bahia (www.vertentes.ufba.br), que se dedica ao estudo da realidade sociolinguística do Brasil e de sua formação sócio-histórica, considerando particularmente o contato entre línguas. É autor dos livros Língua e Sociedade Partidas (Contexto, 2015) Sistema, Mudança e Linguagem (Parábola, 2004) e organizador e autor do livro O Português Afro-Brasileiro (EDUFBA, 2009). Recebeu o Prêmio Jabuti (2º Lugar), no ano de 2016, na Categoria Teoria/Crítica Literária, Dicionários e Gramáticas, por seu livro Língua e Sociedade Partidas.
