ABSTRACT: Contemporary literature written by women has promoted reflections that contribute significantly to raising awareness about sexual violence against women. Exemplary of this perspective, Maria José Silveira's novel Maria Altamira (2020) deals with various forms of violence against women throughout the reading, especially in relation to the protagonists, Alelí and Maria Altamira, whose problematic constitutes the focus of the present article. To this end, we adhered to a qualitative methodology associated with deduction and interpretive induction, based mainly on Magno (2013) and Machado (2010, 2014), with regard to the representation of violence against women, and, in relation to the study of the narrator, we used the assumptions of Friedman (2002), Leite (2004) and Benjamin (1987). The research was motivated by the discipline "Study of the Narrative Text" at PPGL - UFS. An omniscient narrator was identified that alludes to a voice culturally constructed by society associated with rape culture and machismo.
Keywords: Contemporary literature. Sexual violence. Maria Altamira.
