VIVEK SHRAYA’S POTENT BODY
QUEER NECROPOLITICS AND BIORESISTANCES IN I’M AFRAID OF MEN

Joining discussions about bio/necropolitics and affects, this work investigates Vivek Shraya’s I’m Afraid of Men while approaching the concept of queer necropolitics. By briefly mapping the field of biopolitics and necropolitics, this article points out how the use of these terms helps one understand the ways in which life feels like death in the memoir written by Shraya, a trans woman, in the context of the Global North. Taking into consideration canonical works by Michel Foucault (2021) and Achilles Mbembe (2018, 2020) as well as the contributions of emergent theorists such as C. Riley Snorton and Jin Haritaworn (2013), Ann Cvetkovich (2012) and Andityas Matos and Francis Collado (2021), it is suggested that Shraya’s work materialises arts of survival which will be here called bioresistances.
