O fio de Ariadne: tradutoras dos clássicos no Brasil

Abstract

The first translations of the classics in Brazil date back to Colonial times, but versions signed by women are only recorded from the 1930s of the last century. My aim is to present a survey, albeit incipient, of this production to provide an overview of Brazilian women translators of Greek and Latin, thus contributing to bringing greater visibility to an activity that is often relegated to the background. I will focus on the precursors and their working conditions in the thirties and forties; the pioneers, the first generation that emerged from university courses in Classical Literature in the fifties and sixties; and the female PhDs, who are increasingly present in the publishing market today. The idea is to draw the thread of Ariadne so that it will be possible to guide us through the labyrinths of forgetfulness, thereby launching a more ambitious project, that of writing the history of translation of classics in Brazil.
