The present article proposes a reading of the mechanics of violence and power relations on Sal Island, in Cape Verde, enacted by the Cape Verdean writer Evel Rocha in his novel Marginais, published in 2010. Through the metaphor of fireflies, by Pier Paolo Pasolini, taken up again by Geoges Didi-Huberman in The survival of fireflies (2011), this article, based on the analysis of the referred novel, focuses on the forms of resistance and survival of the margins, in a context marked on the one hand by the exploitation of land and bodies by the tourism industry, on the other hand by the violent action of the public power.
