Journal History

The journal Cadernos de Letras da UFF exists since 1990, when it was created as a way to promote scientific papers produced in the Departments of the Institute of Language and Linguistics’ at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF). It was born from the support from Professors Roberto Acízelo and Lucia Teixeira (Director and Vice-Director of the ILL – 1986/1990). Cadernos de Letras da UFF founded a space not only for disclosing texts based on the reflection and research of professors and pupils of the Institute, but also for the reception of opportune articles, in moments of internal and external discussion in the Language and Linguistics’ fields.

In 2005, during the administration of Professors Livia Reis and Mario Lugarinho (Director and Vice-Director of the ILL – 2003/2007), a broad overhaul in the journal's editorial policy was promoted. From then on, the journal counts with an Editorial Commission, constituted by the Vice-Director (President of the Commission) and by three Counsellors indicated from the three departments which compose the Languages and Linguistics’ Institute (ILL) at UFF, plus a Consulting Council (composed by ILL renowned researcher from the faculty as well as from other national and international Universities). Gradually, Cadernos de Letras da UFF intensified the collaboration with any member of the national or international academic community, provided that their work would have the recommendation for publication by the evaluation of the Editorial Commission and/or the Consulting Council, taking into consideration its relevance, theoretical, scientific and pedagogical consistency. With the reshaping of its editorial policy, the journal sought after publishing instigating themes of broader academic interest, which would promote reflection and open debates.

From 2008 on, in the administration of Professors Livia Reis (Director) and Jussara Abraçado (Vice-Director – 2008/2011), the electronical version of Cadernos de Letras da UFF was created and the composition of the journal was redefined. Which now has the following sections: 1-Dossiê (theme), aimed at the thematic development of the issue of the magazine and consisting of one interview and articles 2- Vária (other themes), with free themed essays and 3-Reviews as well as other topics of interest, like translations, can be found.

In the following years, the journal suffered some changes for its improvement and efficiency such as research sources and analytical-theoretical production, solidifying its critical contribution.

Since the second semester of 2014, with issue 49 published, Cadernos de Letras da UFF participates of OJS (Open Journal Systems), which strengthened its diffusion and broadened up its read range. Now, with issue 50 published in July 2015, the Journal Cadernos de Letras da UFF ensures the vitality of its career and affirms itself as an academic journal of tradition, always ready to reinvent itself and to move beyond in its mission of effectively contributing for the production of scientific knowledge in the areas of Language and Linguistics.
