On the paths of justice and righteousness: sermon at the first election of the Provincial Legislative Assembly of Espírito Santo (1834)

Abstract

This article contains the transcription of the document entitled "Discourse, which in the act of the election of the first provincial deputies, recited in the year 1834, in the parish church of the city of Victoria, by Father Dr. João Climaco de Alvarenga Rangel". This is the sermon given by a pastor from Espírito Santo, in the capital of the province of Espírito Santo, at the mass that preceded the meeting of voters who would choose the first representatives of the provincial legislative house. After four decades of its original production, in 1875, the sermon was published in the periodical O Espírito Santense, whose transcription we offer to the reader of Cantareira magazine. In the introduction, the role of sermons in the electoral sphere and their pedagogical nature in the political field of the nineteenth century were discussed. It was also sought to point out the main elements present in the speech recited in the 19th century Victory that sought to guide the behavior of citizens, highlighting the absorption of Catholic rituals in the electoral liturgy for the purpose of mobilization and political debate.
