Reports from a restless country: critical-textual analysis of the Noticia da sublevação (...) de 1720

Abstract

This article proposes a textual analysis of the Noticia da sublevação, que nas minas do ouro preto houve no anno de 1720, a manuscript on the revolt of Vila Rica belonging to the Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB), in the University of São Paulo (USP). It is a text related to another more well-known codex, the Discurso historico, e político sobre a soblevação [...] de 1720, but with a unique profile. In it, we note the weight of the factual narrative and a concern to facilitate further reading. Based on Erich Auerbach's thesis on the novel at the beginning of the Renaissance, we seek to understand its textual form from three analytical axes: frame, protagonists and composition. We believe that, thus, it is possible to point out the importance of this manuscript as a literary article, in addition to the objective information about the uprising and 18th century Minas do Ouro.
