Abstract

Based on the recognition of the crucial role of public communication vehicles for democracy, this paper observes the news coverage of Agência Brasil (ABr/EBC) on the presidential candidates Jair Bolsonaro and Fernando Haddad during the second round of the 2018 elections. It was made a thematic analysis of 297 contents to identify whether the news agency fulfilled its objectives set by law, such as promoting public debate on relevant issues, contributing to the formation of critical awareness and fostering social participation and building citizenship. Among the results found, we can highlight a journalistic practice as a rule of protocol, with limited thematic, regional and source plurality and focused on approaches to factual and controversial issues to the detriment of the guidelines on social minorities, political platforms or that value democracy, citizenship and human rights.
