Abstract

Based on the political theory of agenda building and the concept of media logic, this article aims to underpin theoretically the role of (online) hate speech in the far right rise, particularly with regard to the presidential election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018. In this meaning, hate speech poses a specific issue in the far right agenda, which consists of libeling sistemically discriminated groups. In social media, such group libel works as an interaction catch, enabling networking and mobilization. Due to its particular features, this issue changes the meaning of polarization: It is no longer a matter of the distance between the positions, but rather the fact that such derogatory communication becomes one of the positions.
