This article aims to discuss and analyze the use of the generational approach in the elaboration of public policies aimed at two groups, the elderly and young people. The methodology used is anchored in documentary research, with the statutes of the elderly and youth as a basic reference. One of the main results found is the recognition that generation works as a reference in the process of elaborating public policies, in a social context, at the beginning of the 21st century, in which the elderly and young people gain visibility and their demands are considered socially legitimate by brazilian society. It is concluded, therefore, that generation is a current and potent marker for the field of public policies.
