In this text we hold a debate about the faces of development, through a ethnographic study, aiming to demonstrate how its materialization occurred in the Comunidade do Touro, located in the municipality of Serranópolis de Minas, which lived with the incentives to cotton monoculture as an axis of development and modernization. We propose a reflection based on the results of the authors' research, the result of the insertion in the OPARÁ-MUTUM: Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisas sobre Migrações e Comunidades Tradicionais do rio São Francisco. We conducted research based on qualitative methodology, with bibliographic study and field research, preparing in-depth interviews, observation of daily life, privilegionting the experience and perceptions of residents. By analyzing the impacts of monoculture, we reveal the resistances established in the place, which occur both in the movement of leaving, as well as of staying.
