In this paper, we discuss the socio-environmental conflict that the municipality of Serro/MG is experiencing, due to the attempts to set up iron mining companies in its territory, since 2014. The objective is to describe and discuss how the tensions between mining companies and those who resist mining are locally processed, triggering the defense of the place based on its biodiversity, culture, rights of quilombola communities and their traditional ways of living. To this end, we have contextualized the problem historically and analyzed the process of conflict and resistance based on theoretical frameworks on development and political ecology. We made use of the bibliographical research, documental research and participant observation, which were carried out from 2019 to 2021. The analysis showed the alignment of colonial, racist and anti-democratic structures, with the neoextractivism project represented by the mining companies.
