The impact of new technologies and the conformity of today's world to technological disruption, mainly promoted by advances in artificial intelligence (AI), has been visible both through its positive and negative effects. While on the positive side, technological innovation creates new possibilities regarding the processing of data and information, in order to improve everyday tasks and practices in societies, on the other hand, its perverse effects collide with the democratic principles, the rule of law and social justice.
This article highlights these perverse effects of AI on four dimensions of society: 1) the dehumanization and destabilization of society through new algorithmic forms and “artificial” content; 2) the favouring of totalitarian tendencies through social control, surveillance, and lack of privacy; 3) the disinformation and data manipulation in the political functioning of societies; 4) and the reconfiguration of socioeconomic inequalities and power distribution in the world. This results in the need for and importance of its legal regulation, as well as the deepening of a socio-legal analysis and interpretation that can contribute to the strengthening of democracy, the rule of law and social justice.
