THE RIGHT TO THE CITY AND TO SAFETY IN BRAZILIAN URBAN PUBLIC SPACES
THE THEORY OF CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
Abstract
The right to the city and societal and human security is provided for in Law No. 10.257, of July 10, 2001 (Statute of the City) and in the Constitution of 1988. However, in Brazil, crime in urban public spaces causes insecurity in the inhabitants . It is worth noting that the inadequate infrastructure of a city provides opportunities for criminal practice and makes victims vulnerable; the exorbitant state spending on public security alone is insufficient to contain crime; and, preventive measures reduce urban violence and popular insecurity. The elaboration of this research is motivated by its social character and its territorial amplitude. Thus, the objective is to demonstrate that the aforementioned rights can be protected and ensured through Crime Prevention, through Environmental Design. Furthermore, bibliographic research techniques will be used, of a basic nature, of the exploratory type. In conclusion, it is proposed the implementation of preventive methods developed by the Government and society, by improving the infrastructure of public spaces, with a view to protecting the residents of a particular region.
