About the Journal

Brief history

Since 2008, the Revista Eletrônica Ensino, Saúde e Ambiente (ESA), ISSN 1983-7011, has been publishing unpublished articles on interdisciplinarity in the field of science teaching at the interface with health and environmental issues. In recent years, it has been expanding this transdisciplinary perspective by encouraging publications that highlight the triad of teaching, health and the environment by confronting racism, sexism and ableism. The journal was published every four months in April, August and December. In 2023 it changed its periodicity to continuous flow. The aim is to publish national and international scientific articles resulting from original research and experience reports.

The articles submitted are evaluated by independent and anonymous referees. The editor's decision is made on the basis of the two opinions; in case of doubt, a third evaluation is requested.

ESA is currently ranked among the B1 journals in Qualis Capes.

Since 2013, it has been linked to the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in the Teaching of Natural Sciences at the Fluminense Federal University.

ESA has been publishing national and international articles in Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Also in line with Open Science practices, in 2025 the journal will offer authors and referees the option of opening up the peer review process, with or without identifying their names. Editorial Policy

PEER REVIEW PROCESS

Editorial flow

The process of evaluating manuscripts is carried out in 2 (two) stages:

1st evaluation stage - Compliance with standards

After submission, the evaluation process begins by checking that the text complies with the standards specified in the "Instructions to Authors" and also with the publication emphasis and scope of the journal. At this stage, coordinated by the ESA editors and associate editors, the items specified for the preparation of the manuscript are checked, as well as the completeness of the submission metadata. When the requirements are not met, the authors will be notified and may resubmit the adjusted article within 15 (fifteen) days.

2nd evaluation stage - Peer review

The manuscripts approved in the first stage are then monitored by the ESA's team of editors, more specifically the associate editors, who assign the referees to each article. The articles are sent for peer review, preserving the identity of the authors and consultants (double blind review). From 2025, it will be possible for authors to choose between the double blind review and the open review process, in accordance with the principles of Open Science. The reviews prepared by the referees (PhDs in areas related to the emphasis of the article) contain justifications that may suggest approval for publication without changes, approval for publication with recommendations for changes or not recommending publication. In the event of conflicting or insufficient opinions, new ones will be appointed. After reviewing the redrafted versions, the publishers make the final decision on whether to publish the article. Authors are kept informed via the journal's website and messages.

Opening options

The progressive opening up of the peer review process is planned for 2025, when it will be possible for authors to choose between double blind review and the opening up of the evaluation process, in accordance with the principles of Open Science. We will consider three possible ways of opening up the evaluation process: 1. publishing the names of the publishers responsible for the evaluation at the end of the article. 2. offering the reviewers the option of dialoguing directly with the author, whether or not their identities are made public. 3. the publication of the reviews of approved articles, with the identification of the reviewers. Authors may choose one or more of the means of publication offered by the journal.

The author's options must be informed on a form in accordance with Open Science.

The reviewers must state whether they agree with the journal's policy of opening up the evaluation process by answering whether they are available for evaluation, when they will already be informed of the author's choices about opening up the evaluation process.

Ethics in Publishing

The Revista Eletrônica Ensino, Saúde e Ambiente is dedicated to complying with good practices with regard to the moral conduct of scientific journal publishing.   • present an accurate account of the work carried out, according to the journal's standards, including the ESA's scope of publication;
  • give due credit to the authors of the works referenced;
  • not publish manuscripts that essentially describe the same research in more than one journal; send the same manuscript to more than one journal at the same time and/or publish the same article in more than one journal;
  • The lead author must ensure that all co-authors are included in the article; he/she must also make sure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and have agreed to its submission for publication;
