The symptom in Freud: function beyond meaning

If Descartes produced a secession between body and mind, Freud took an opposite approach by investigating the meaning of the hysterical symptom, attributing it a functional status in the suffering of his patients. However, there remains a tendency for some symptoms, regarded as purely physical, to lose this status, favoring definitions of a purely physiological nature. In this context, the theme discussed in this article is the symptom, specifically questioning whether a symptom that does not seem to have a sense historized by the patient’s discourse might still have a basis in Freudian theory. The objective is to demonstrate that even if a symptom loses its bond in the constitution of symbolic meaning, it does not lose its psychic function for the subject, thus enabling, like the classic symptom of hysteria, an analytical articulation. Therefore, the study is organized around the concept of the symptom in Freud’s work, concluding that even without the symbolic connection of the classical symptom, it still plays a crucial role in the subject’s psychic economy and retains its value as a discursive operator in the analytical process.
