Abstract

Our study attempts at reflections on the travel literature of some French writers who having travelled to Brazil since the Renaissance, but spe­cially on the second half of 18th century and the first half of 19th century, present in their personal reports different ways of viewing the people, the nature and the habits of the visited country; thus they offer in their diaries the written data, which allows us to study a crossing of paths of France and Brazil from the Renaissance onwards and also the independence movements of the country once called «France Antarctique». La Condamine and Francis de Castelnau are some of the travellers responsible for important aspects in the study of a catching of eyes between the two countries.It seems of utmost importance so as to reach a better understanding of the relationship between the two peoples.

Author Biography

Maria Elizabeth Chaves de Mello, UFF

Professora associada III do Instituto de Letras da UFF. Realizou pós-doutorado na Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris (2008), doutorado em Letras na PUC-RIO (1993) e mestrado em Letras na PUC-RIO (1986). Foi professora da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1988-1992) e professora visitante da Université du Québec à Montréal em 2002. Atualmente, atua na pós-graduação em estudos de literatura, na UFF, na linha de pesquisa “Perspectivas teóricas do discurso literário” (orientadora de mestrado e doutorado) e, na graduação, em língua e literatura francesa. É pesquisadora do CNPq na área de Letras, com ênfase em Teoria da Literatura, Literatura Comparada e Literaturas Estrangeiras Modernas. Suas pesquisas giram em torno do tema do cruzamento de olhares entre a Europa e o Brasil e suas conseqüências na literatura e na crítica brasileiras, principalmente em relação ao caso de Machado de Assis, diante dessa troca de olhares. Projeto: Memória, fictício e imaginário na literatura da modernidade. É autora de três livros e de inúmeros artigos em revistas especializadas.
