Abstract

The extension project “Safe and Sustainable Agriculture: Education and Aware­ness in the Rural Community” was implemented in Francisco da Silva Maia State School, located in the rural area of Passos, Minas Gerais. Aimed at 6th-grade ele­mentary students, the project sought to raise awareness about agricultural work safety and environmental sustainability, empowering the participants as multipli­ers of safe and sustainable practices. The methodology combined theoretical and practical activities: initially, the team introduced themselves and the University of the State of Minas Gerais (UEMG), encouraging students to share experiences related to environmental challenges and the use of Personal Protective Equip­ment (PPE), in addition to addressing safety in the use of agricultural machinery and implements. This was followed by an interactive lecture on agricultural and environmental safety, complemented by an informative banner. In the practice phase, students participated in demonstrative workshops on the correct use of PPE, received educational leaflets, and engaged in content reinforcement activities. Additionally, they were encouraged to continue their studies by receiving bookmarks containing information about the courses offered by UEMG. The ac­tive participation of the students and the collaboration of the Science teacher were fundamental for the success of the activities. As a result, an increase in the students’ awareness of the importance of safety in the rural environment, as well as the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, were observed. The conclu­sion is that education and awareness in the rural community are essential to promote a safer and more sustainable agriculture, highlighting the vital role of extension projects in integrating university and society.
